Characteristics of Life

Movement is the ability of an organism to move its own body or part of its body from one place to another.

​

Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens within cells to release energy from food.

​

Sensitivity/Irritability is defined as the ability of organisms to detect changes in their surrounding environment. This change is called a stimulus which causes the organism to react.

 

Growth is defined as an irreversible increase in size or height of organisms.

​

Reproduction is the ability of living organisms to give birth to young ones. The purpose of reproduction is to ensure the continuation of the species. There are two types of reproduction: Asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction. 

​

Excretion is defined as the removal of metabolic waste products from the body.

N.B: Excretion is different to egestion which is the removal of faeces.

​

Nutrition is the taking in of food into the body, in order to make energy and provide the materials for building up the body parts.
